The Analytical Writing Assessment measures your ability to identify strengths and weaknesses of an argument. During the Analytical Writing Assessment, you will analyze the reasoning behind a given argument and write a critique of that argument.

The Analytical Writing Assessment section consists of one 30-minute writing task—Analysis of an Argument. The arguments on the test include topics of general interest related to business, or a variety of other subjects. Specific knowledge of the essay topic is not necessary; only your capacity to communicate your ideas, think critically, and write analytically is assessed.

The Integrated Reasoning section of the GMAT exam tests your ability to think critically while analyzing data presented in a case study.

You will have 30 minutes to solve 12 questions of four types:

  • Multi-Source Reasoning
  • Table Analysis
  • Graphics Interpretation
  • Two-Part Analysis

The Quantitative section tests your ability to solve math questions that are based on topics taught in middle & high school.

You have 62 minutes to complete 31-multiple choice questions. The Quantitative section has two question types: Problem Solving & Data Sufficiency.

The Verbal Reasoning section of the GMAT exam measures your ability to read and comprehend written material, to reason and evaluate arguments, and to correct written material to express ideas effectively in English.

It is important to use the proper GMAT study materials.

How is the GMAT scored?

Total GMAT scores range from 200 to 800. About two-thirds of test takers score between 400 and 600.

What's on the GMAT exam?

The GMAT Exam has Four Sections:

  1. Analytical Writing Assessment—measures your ability to think critically and communicate your ideas
  2. Integrated Reasoning—measures your ability to analyze data and evaluate information presented in multiple formats
  3. Quantitative Reasoning—measures your ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning skills
  4. Verbal Reasoning—measures your ability to read and understand written material, evaluate arguments, and correct written material to conform to standard written English

What order do the sections on the GMAT appear?

You can choose from three options for your exam’s section order.

  1. Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, Verbal

What does computer-adaptive mean?

The difficulty of the test matches your ability level. If you answer a question correctly, the computer will select a harder subsequent question. If you answer a question incorrectly, your next question will be easier.  You will not be able to skip questions or change your answers.

Where can I take the GMAT?

You can either take the GMAT at a local test center or at home.

How much does the GMAT Cost?

In the United States, the GMAT costs $275 to take.

Can I reschedule or cancel my GMAT Exam?

Yes, you can reschedule or cancel your exam online or by phone (an additional $10).

When should I take the GMAT test?

I’d recommend taking the GMAT a few months before your business school application deadline. This gives you time to retake the GMAT if you aren’t happy with the results.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

The more time you spend preparing for the GMAT, the better you will do. The time you spend preparing for the GMAT is unique to you. I would recommend giving yourself 6 months to prepare for the exam. I’d spend 3-4 months studying for the test before taking it.

How many times can I take the GMAT exam?

You may take the GMAT exam up to 5 times within a 12-month period and no more than 8 times total.

How long must I wait to retake the GMAT?

You must wait at least 16 days after you take the exam to take it again.

What is the average GMAT score?

The average GMAT score is 568.21

What should I bring to the GMAT?

On exam day, if you are taking the exam at a test center, you must present one form of government-issued identification (passport, driver’s license, state ID, military ID, green card).

If you are taking the exam online, you must upload one form of government-issued identification (passport, driver’s license, state ID, military ID, green card). On exam day, the ID you uploaded at registration must match the ID that you present to the online proctor.

How long does the GMAT exam take?

The GMAT exam is comprised of four separately timed sections. You will have the opportunity to take two optional eight-minute breaks. The total exam is just over 3 hours, and the total expected time in the test center, including check-in, breaks, etc., is approximately 3 ½ hours.

How hard is the GMAT?

The GMAT is one of the most difficult standardized tests, but with practice and tutoring the GMAT can be mastered.

Is GMAT for MBA only?

Yes, GMAT is specifically designed for MBA programs. Some MBA Programs also accept the GRE in addition to the GMAT.

Is 700 a good GMAT score?

Any score of 700 or above is excellent. A score of 700 would qualify someone for consideration to a top 10 business school.
