About the TACHS Exam

The Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS) is used exclusively by Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn/Queens and the Archdiocese of New York.

It is administered to 8th graders every November at various Catholic schools across New York City. Alternatively, some Catholic high schools use the HSPT to select candidates entering 9th grade.

TACHS is designed to measure school aptitude and scholastic achievement in Reading, Mathematics, and Language. It consists of approximately 200 questions and lasts around 2 hours and 15 minutes.

TACHS Registration

Registration will open on August 21, 2023, at 9:00 AM EST, and will close on October 26, 2023, at 11:59 PM EST. Do not miss the deadline; there are no exceptions.

The TACHS Exam will be administered on November 4th, 2023.

What is the TACHS Exam?

The TACHS (Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools) is the exam required for your child to take in order to be qualified to attend a Catholic High School.

What grade do you take the TACHS?

The TACHS exam is only open to students in eighth grade and is given once a year in November.

What's on the TACHS?

The TACHS Exam has four sections which include Critical Reading, Math, Language Arts and Ability.

  • #2 pencils: Take multiple sharpened #2 pencils so that you have backups in case one breaks.

Is there a penalty for guessing on the TACHS?

There is no penalty for guessing on the TACHS, so don’t leave any questions blank.

Does the TACHS have an essay?

There is no essay section, all of the TACHS questions are multiple-choice.

How is the TACHS scored?

The range for scaled scores is 200 – 800 total points. In addition to your scaled score, you will also be sent a percentile score. On average, a good TACHS percentile score ranges from 70 to 99. The average percentile score is a 50.

How long does it take to get TACHS results?

Beginning on January 20, 2023 5:00 PM EST, click on the “Access my Home Report” link to get a copy of your Home Report.

How many times can I take the TACHS?

You may only take the TACHS once.
