About the SSAT Exam

The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is the required admission test at many of the best independent schools in the United States. Your SSAT score is one part of your complete application to a private school, and while it is important, it is not the only criteria for admission. The SSAT is designed for students in grades 3 through 11 and is administered on three levels (Elementary, Middle, and Upper).

The purpose of the SSAT is to measure the basic verbal, quantitative, and reading skills students develop over time—skills that are needed for successful performance in independent schools.

The SSAT is designed to measure the verbal, quantitative, and reading skills you have acquired, instead of focusing on your mastery of particular course materials. It emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for academic success. The distribution of question difficulties is set so that the test will effectively differentiate among test takers who vary in their level of abilities.

  • SSAT Standard Test

The SSAT Standard test is held on six Saturdays each year. Registration for the SSAT is currently closed and will reopen on August 1, 2023.

  • SSAT at a Prometric Center

Students taking the Middle and Upper Level SSAT may take a Prometric Test, which is a computer-based SSAT at a Prometric Test Center.

  • SSAT at Home

Students taking the Middle and Upper Level SSAT may take a SSAT at Home, which is a computer-based SSAT taken at a student’s home or other suitable location.

  • SSAT Flex Test

A Flex test is a group or individual paper-based administration on any date other than the Standard test dates. Flex tests may only be given by members of The Association who are educational consultants or member schools.

SSAT Levels

There are 3 SSAT Test Levels- Elementary, Middle, & Upper. They provide admission officers with an idea of your academic ability and “fit” in their schools.

  • Elementary Level SSAT

The Elementary Level SSAT is given to students in third grade applying for admission to fourth grade (Third Grade Elementary SSAT) and in fourth grade applying for admission to fifth grade (Fourth Grade Elementary SSAT).

  • Middle & Upper Level SSAT

The Middle Level SSAT is given to students in grades 5-7 applying for admission to middle school. The Upper Level SSAT is for students currently in grades 8-11 applying for admission to high school.

SSAT Sections & Length

Both of the 3rd grade and 4th grade Elementary Level SSATs share the same format and timing. The Middle and Upper Level SSATs share the same format and timing.
